Education Expectations: Republican lawmakers outline plan to measure effectiveness of schools and give more local curriculum control
Iowa Republicans say they have a way to improve the state's schools. But, Democrats say they've already raised academic standards without Republican help.

Tuesday, Republicans offered a three point plan giving schools more power to set their own curriculum. It also makes it easier for taxpayers to review a school's effectiveness and requires exit exams for graduating seniors.

Representative Mike May says making it harder to graduate will improve education.

Meanwhile, House majority leader Kevin McCarthy says Republicans have voted against training for teachers to meet Iowa's new core curriculum, expanding access to early childhood education, and funding for schools hit by the natural disasters of 2008.

"If Republicans have a record to run on -- it's the record number of times they have voted 'no' in the last three years," says McCarthy.
