For months, parents plan for the delivery of a baby down to the very last detail. When the time comes, most soon-to-be-moms picture themselves in the care of a doctor at the hospital. It was a much different story for an Ames couple this morning.
"The first thing I thought is if I didn't help her, we were going to lose the baby," says Lony Gatwas. He and his wife were on their way to the hospital, but they ran out of time. In the parking lot outside of their apartment, Gatwas delivered his son.
Baby Kai has five brothers and sisters. None have a story like his. "I tell them I deliver the baby and they tell me what, are you a doctor? I say no, it just happened," says Gatwas. It all happened so fast, he didn't have time to think. Hours later, he can't believe that he brought his son into the world. "I would not believe that because it's incredible."
Mom and baby are doing well at Mary Greely Medical Center.
