RENEW IOWA: New store in a metro mall sells clothing made from bamboo
You'll probably notice more eco-friendly products when you're out shopping this holiday season, especially if you take a stroll through one metro mall. The owners of a new store inside Valley West Mall say they had the environment in mind when they opened the doors a few weeks ago.

It's called Bamboo. Kirk and Jamie Wilson opened the store late last month after selling the eco-friendly goods online. Mr. Wilson says, "We usually get people from the coasts, California and New York and that kind of thing. It's real big there, so we see a lot of businesses out there. We haven't had much business in Iowa."

Wilson says they're hoping to change that. He says bamboo is starting to become more mainstream as other stores sell items partly made of the rapidly renewable resource. He says it's raised without herbicides or pesticides. It can grow up to three feet per day. He says, "You can harvest it everyday. It's very very eco-friendly and produces a lot of oxygen, a lot more than any forest can produce because it's so thick."

Wilson says another benefit is the clothing is also very soft. "It's silky, silky smooth. People are turned off by it because it's made from bamboo shoots. They think it's going to be rough like hemp. But, it's not. It's the silkiest smoothest thing you'll ever feel."

They also sell bowls, pitchers and Christmas ornaments made of recycled glass. And, they carry kitchen products made from Bamboo wood. Plus, you'll find eco-friendly jewelry made by fair trade practices. Mr. Wilson says, "We really believe in everything we're selling here. We think it's kind of a diamond in the rough."

Wilson says bamboo is also anti-microbial, making it great for clothing that is constantly close to your skin and kitchen towels.
