The pilot of a commuter plane that crashed in upstate New York grew up in Iowa. That's according to Jeff Hiser, who went to school with Marvin Renslow in Shenandoah, where Renslow's mother, Shirley, still lives.

Hiser is the activities director at Shenandoah High School.

The Continental commuter plane crashed into a house in suburban Buffalo Thursday night, killing all 49 people aboard and a person in the home. Hiser says Renslow's mother was notified about the crash on Friday.

Hiser says Renslow graduated from high school in 1979 and left Iowa to pursue his goal of becoming a pilot.

Hiser says Renslow, who lived in Lutz, Fla., with his wife and two children, was outgoing, involved in the fine arts and an excellent drummer.
