Rep. Kerry Burt

Rep. Kerry Burt (WHO)

State Representative Kerry Burt pleaded guilty Friday morning to OWI first offense. Ankeny Police stopped Burt last February.

He told police he was on his way home from an event, attended by the governor and other lawmakers.

As part of his sentence, the Waterloo lawmaker received a deferred judgment and was placed on one year of probation. He must also pay a $650 fine and complete an OWI program.

Burt released a statement on the conclusion of the matter which reads, in part, "I wish to apologize to my family, colleagues, constituents, and all who share Iowa's roads for my poor judgment in drinking and driving. There is no one but me to blame for my foolish decision. Everyone who knows me recognizes that this action was completely out of character, and I will not allow it to happen again."

Burt is also accused of providing a false address in order to save thousands of dollars on his child's tuition at the Malcom Price Laboratory School on the UNI campus. A criminal investigation is underway, but no charges have been filed.
