Members of two area churches are recovering after possible cases of carbon monoxide poisoning Sunday afternoon.
The first carbon monoxide leak sent more than 30 kids from a children's church choir to the hospital. The Learning of the Lord Church was using a generator to supply all its power.
Des Moines Police say the generator in the garage next to the building backfired, sending carbon monoxide into the church.
The kids were practicing from noon until 3:00 p.m. Some children started to complain at the end of rehearsal and others felt ill by the time church started at 5:00 p.m. That's when police and fire were called.
Seven of the children were taken the hospital by ambulance. More than 20 other kids were taken to the hospital by their parents to get checked out.
"With winter coming on and potential power outages that we experience sporadically throughout the area if you run a generator, you don't want it in your garage, you want it outside were it's very ventilated very well and it will disperse out and not into a structure," says David Huberty with the Des Moines Police Department.
A few miles away, at 2130 Easton Boulevard, Sunshine Open Bible Church also experienced a carbon monoxide leak. The Des Moines Fire Department says about 150 people were having dinner when they began feeling sick.
One person was taken to the hospital.
Midamerican Energy says a pipe near the building broke, sending carbon monoxide inside the church.
