REPEAT OFFENDER: The chase suspect shot by a State Trooper in Seymour Thursday has a previous chase-related conviction
The names have been released of the men involved in an officer involved shooting following a chase Thursday in southern Iowa. The chase started in Centerville late Wednesday night and ended with a crash about 30-minutes later near Seymour Community Schools.

Police say officers tried to pull over 26-year-old Justin Jacob on suspicion of drunk driving. Jacob took off and continued the chase even when police used stop sticks to flatten one of his tires.

Near Seymour schools, State Trooper Chris Spencer used his patrol car to end the chase. "As the driver of the car was pinned in, he attempted to flee the scene, striking the vehicle. The trooper then responded and fired his weapon at the vehicle," says DCI special agent Mike Motsinger.

Jacob is now hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.

As in any police-involved shooting Trooper Chris Spencer is on paid leave while the investigation unfolds.

This isn't the first time Justin Jacob has led police on a chase. In January of 2003 he was charged and convicted of vehicular manslaughter for a chase that killed Davis County deputy sheriff Dennis McElderry.

McElderry was hit and killed by another officer while standing along Highway 63 trying to use stop sticks to end a chase.

Jacobs was sentenced to 11 years in prison on that conviction but only served five years of the sentence.
