Waldorf College is one of many schools trying to stay afloat (WHO-TV / March 6, 2009)
Iowa college students could be bracing for some changes in the classroom. Budget cuts as well as a decline in donations have public and private colleges in Iowa searching for answers.
As state universities are charged with trimming up to 11% from the budget, staff layoffs, increased fees and fewer classes are under consideration.
Meanwhile, Iowa's private colleges are suffering from fewer donations. Now Waldorf College in Forest City is turning to another school for help. Details of a merger with Columbia Southern University are still in the works. The school says frustrated alumni must realize they're not alone.
"It doesn't matter if you're a state institution or a private institution, you're having to say 'Well how are we going to do it different next year so we can keep the best of what we offer to students going forward?'" said Joy Newcom of Waldorf College.
Waldorf officials do not know if the school will keep its name in the merger.
