Gov. Culver talks about OWI arrest of Rep. Kerry Burt (WHO)
Governor Culver has broken his silence about a state lawmaker's claim the two were drinking together before the lawmaker was arrested for drunk driving last February.
The governor said Wednesday he had been drinking with Waterloo Democrat Kerry Burt at an Iowa Pharmacy Association event the same night Burt was picked up. "I had a glass of wine. Had a quick dinner and went home," says Culver.
The governor says he only spent about half an hour with Burt at the Embassy Suites in downtown Des Moines, along with at least a dozen others.
According to a video from Ankeny Police and incident reports, Burt mentioned he had been drinking with the governor at least four times. Burt also told officers they couldn't arrest him.
The governor says he can't say what Burt did after he left to go home that night, "I was home at 9:00 p.m. and he was arrested at 2:00 a.m. and I have no idea what he did between nine and two."
The governor refused to call for Burt's resignation. He says that should be up to Burt, his family, constituents and lawyers.
