Authorities say a 46-year-old man training to become a deputy died after collapsing during a training run.
Polk County sheriff Deputy Jana Rooker says Cass Nemmers, of Des Moines, died Wednesday after the run at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston.
Nemmers had just completed a 1 1/2 mile run as part of a pre-academy physical. Rooker told The Des Moines Register that Nemmers was having trouble standing and breathing and collapsed. He was flown to a Des Moines hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Nemmers was a Polk County Courthouse security officer and was training to become a deputy.
