Thursday's simulation included a train derailment that resulted in a dangerous chemical spill. Members of the Guard worked with Des Moines Police and Fire, Polk County Emergency Management, haz-mat crews and the bomb squad to respond to the pretend disaster.

One-hundred and 66 Iowans who applied to be part of the training played the roles of the dead and injured. They are being paid for two days of work and are not only receiving acting advice, but also extensive makeup to make their wounds look real.

500 National Guard members and 500 members of other emergency response agencies are taking part in the training.
