It looks like spring cleaning officially started months early for many families Saturday, beginning with their medicine cabinets.

"When they are bringing them they are bringing them in pretty big quantities rather than just one bottle or two bottles they are bringing bags full of stuff."

We went to just one of the six locations in Polk county where residents came to drop off their expired and unused prescription drugs.

Experts say the fastest growing drug problem in the u-s is abuse of prescription drugs. The sad part, one third of new prescription drug abusers is between the ages 12 and 17.

You don't have to be of legal age to purchase these drugs, they are found within the safety of our homes.

"The drugs are easy to get. They are in their parent's cabinets, grandparent's cabinets, friend's medicine cabinets and many times they will take the drugs not knowing what they are, taking them because they are pretty colors, or they are just experimenting to see what happens."

By raising awareness of the issue, Debbie believes families will begin to realize the dangers of un-used medications and their lethal potential.
