A Des Moines police officer had to rescue two people from a burning duplex early Tuesday morning. The fire broke out just after 2:00 a.m. in the 1500 block of Des Moines Street.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames could be seen coming from the second story of the home. Police say the residents of the second story apartment were not home at the time but a police officer had to help two other people out.

"The people that lived in the downstairs apartment were home. They were aware of the fire but were a little slow getting out so we had an officer help them out," said Officer Danny White.

The fire was put out in about 10 minutes and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
