FLOOD INSURANCE: Some people in Polk County may see their flood insurance rates change following FEMA's release of new flood prediction maps
New flood insurance rate maps could change what some people in Des Moines and Polk County pay for coverage.

"The biggest changes were in area normally protected by levees where recent data couldn't be certified anymore," says Ross Stafford, flood plan administrator.

Tuesday leaders showed those new maps created by FEMA to residents who might be affected. It was re-designed with new scientific data more accurately predicting flooding. The maps are just preliminary and won't be finalized by FEMA for another eight months.

The maps could mean some people living in flood prone areas like Four Mile Creek and the Birdland neighborhood could see changes to their insurance rates.

Those in flood prone areas are only required to get flood insurance if they have a mortgage. If you own your home the decision is up to you.
