Just a few inches of water in August was all it took for mold to take over Karen Fitzgerald's basement in Des Moines. Still, when she stopped in the FEMA office, she never expected assistance like this. The office put her in touch with the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief effort. Volunteers with a unit out of Kentucky are now transforming her basement free of charge
"Heaven knows how long it would be before I got things done," said Fitzgerald.
Anything damaged is hauled out. What remains, is washed and bleached. The goal is to have it ready for contractors to repair in about four hours.
"People are so grateful, and they're so overwhelmed that people are willing to come the distance that we have," said George Shanks, the unit's leader.
The teams say they'll be in central Iowa as long as they are needed. To request their services, call 1-800-460-6881. The elderly, disabled, and those without insurance will be given first priority.
