An Altoona man charged with a fatal weekend hit and run accident made his first court appearance Wednesday morning. Twenty-two-year-old Kristian Jamak is charged with reckless vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle.

The crash happened last Saturday at the intersection of East 23rd and Capitol in Des Moines. Police say Jamak was driving a black Escalade that broadsided a Grand Prix, and that he and his passengers left the scene.

The accident seriously injured the driver, Irena Boone, and her 25-year-old passenger Olivia Rogowski died. Rogowski was pregnant and leaves behind an eight-year-old daughter.

"She told her dad Saturday night that, 'Dad, this is the worst day of my life,' so I think she knows what is happening," says Rogowski's mother-in-law, Linda Abarr.

A Polk County judge set his bond at $250,000 and his preliminary hearing has been set for July 24th.

Jamak has been in trouble with the law before. Back in 2006, he was charged with eluding the police. He was also charged in 2004 with felony possession of a controlled substance. The 22-year-old also has five speeding tickets and two careless driving tickets on his record.

There is a trust fund set up for Olivia's Rogowski's daughter. Contributions can be made to the Fidelity Bank at 177 South Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines 50266.
