The first poll pitting U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, against his most well-known opponent in the 2010 senate race, Democratic attorney Roxanne Conlin, has the incumbent in a comfortable position.

The Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows Grassley with a 57-30% lead, although Grassley is down 18% since a January Poll. According to the poll, Governor Chet Culver has lost a third of support since the beginning of the year, falling from 60% to 40% approval.

Radio Iowa News Director O. Kay Henderson said 2010 could be a difficult year for incumbents. She said, "When the economy isn't doing well, voters appear to be blaming any incumbent they can see."

One independent voter, Richard Bockewitz of Urbandale, feels the frustration of many of his friends. Bockewitz said, "It doesn't feel like the average person counts."

Bockewitz is working two part-time jobs, while he tries to find full-time work. He considers himself an independent and offered a non-partisan job tip for incumbents, "Be honest. Be real. Don't promise things you can't follow through with."
