Iowans have seen a decline in the number of tornadoes sweeping across the plains this year. Thirteen tornadoes have touched down in Iowa this year, resulting in no deaths or injuries.

There were 105 confirmed tornadoes in the state in 2008, resulting in 13 deaths. Nine of those deaths occurred when a tornado demolished the southern part of Parkersburg and nearby New Hartford.

As of Wednesday, the National Weather Service has issued 17 tornado warnings for Iowa. Last year, weather forecasters sent state residents fleeing into basements and storm shelters 131 times.

Also Climatologist Harry Hillaker says if temperatures stay below 90 for the rest of the month, it would be the first time since 1893 that Iowa has missed a 90-degree reading in July.
