More Events Marking Khrushchev's Visit
Fifty years ago a Russian leader visited Iowa in hopes of learning more about agriculture. This week Iowans are remembering that historic visit.

Nikita Khrushchev became friends with Iowa farmer Roswell Garst and he invited the leader to Iowa to teach him about agriculture technology in hopes of helping Khrushchev reduce hunger in his country.

This weekend Iowans are celebrating that moment in history. An open conference was held Friday at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. Iowa leaders including Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Senator Charles Grassley all attended.

The discussion focused on world hunger and U.S./Russian relations. A number of Russian dignitaries were there as well as Khrushchev's son Sergei, who was with his father for his Iowa visit 50 years ago. He says he didn't recognize how important that visit really was.

Sergei is now a Fellow at Brown University in Rhode Island. He has duel citizenship in Russia and the U.S.
