This week, Iowa is celebrating an event that became part of our state's history. Fifty years ago Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev visited the Garst Farm in Coon Rapids.
He also met with leaders in Des Moines and Ames. Khrushchev came to Iowa to learn more about corn production and livestock feeding. What made his visit so remarkable is that it happened at the height of the Cold War.
Events marking the visit begin Thursday in Des Moines with a lecture at Drake University. On Friday, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack will host current Russian leaders and Khrushchev's son.
