OFFICER SUPPORT: Community raises money for injured Des Moines police officer
Three weeks after being seriously injured in the line of duty, Des Moines police officer Nick Lloyd had his first big night on the town Monday. The moment Lloyd's wife wheeled him into the room, a crowd of more than 100 people stood and cheered. "It was great, overwhelming actually. My heart was pounding like I was gonna pass out, but thankfully I didn't," says Lloyd.

Many haven't seen him since a pick up truck ran him over on October 4th. The two ton truck shattered Lloyd's pelvis and knocked out two teeth. "I did hear him when he was calling out for help," says Officer Bryan O'Donnell. There wasn't much he could do to help that night, but Monday night he came to show his support for Lloyd at a fundraiser at the Pelican Bar. "He's a fighter," says O'Donnell.

"I have a lot of pain, but I wasn't going to let it bring me down," says Nick Lloyd. While he can't wait to get out of the wheelchair and back in uniform, his only job for the next six month is to get better.

Monday night's benefit raised about $1,500. The City of Des Moines and Des Moines Police Department are covering all of his medical bills, but the money will help the family cover other costs. Lloyd can no longer work his off duty security job at the Pelican Bar and his wife has taken unpaid time off to help care for him.
