The four meetings drew nearly 100 people, with most supporting medical uses of marijuana, but even advocates are doubtful the state will take quick action.
Although Iowa City Sen. Joe Bolkcom supports legalizing marijuana for medical use, the Democrat says the legislative session that convenes in January will focus on budget issues as the state faces a shortfall of up to $900 million. To cut costs, legislative leaders also have reduced the length of the session by 20 days, leaving less time for other issues.
