Tough times can take a toll on your mental health. Psychologist Warren Phillips says he's noticed an increase in patients coming to his Central Iowa Psychological Services clinics in Ames and West Des Moines this past year.

He says stress from losing a job or your home and other life changes can take a toll on mental health, which can affect your overall health. He says you may be suffering from depression if you notice a change in mood, appetite and sleep for two or more weeks. You might be suffering from anxiety if you constantly feel tense, particularly if you don't know why. He says the symptoms are especially a problem if the anxiety interferes with job, social or family obligations.

He says people often don't seek help because they don't realize it's an issue or they're just nervous. Phillips says, "Sometimes people don't want to see their mental health professional because they're worried that it can be seen as a sign of weakness, but in reality it's not."

He says there are effective treatments, including medicine and behavior therapies. He says 80 percent of patients find relief. Central Iowa Psychological Services is holding an open house with free screenings Tuesday night at their new West Des Moines office on Woodland Avenue. The free screenings are from 5 to 8 p.m.
