WEIGHT LOSS: Shedding pounds with the help of a doctor
You have many options if you want to lose weight in the metro. One program will help you get healthy with the help of doctors and dietitians.

Jeannie Eide says she and her husband Jon were struggling with their weight in June of 2008. She says, "Life was kind of stressful. My job was stressful. We weren't eating healthy. We both gained a lot of weight in our 25 years of marriage."

That's when they decided to start the Optifast program at Mercy Medical Center. Jeannie lost 82 pounds and Jon lost 100 in about seven months. She says, "It feels really good, you have more energy."

Optifast is an eighteen week medically supervised program that focuses on changing your eating habits. For twelve weeks you eat Optifast meal replacement products like bars and shakes. Then doctors and dietitians help you incorporate food.

Dr. Michael Sutcliffe says, "The Optifast program allows us to cut back on types of foods, and it helps us with behavior modification." Dr. Sutcliffe is the Medical Director for the program. It's been at Mercy Medical Center for six and a half years.

Dr. Sutcliffe says the program is for patients who need to lose fifty pounds or more. He says most people lose 10% of their body weight in the first six to seven weeks. He says, "They found by dropping at least 10% of your weight you decrease your risk of both hypertension, diabetes and we usually take medications, blood pressure medicines, diabetes medicines off within the first couple weeks."

After the Optifast program is over, patients continue with what's called GOALS. Jeannie Eide says, "Once you go on GOALS you have access to physicians, dietitians to stay on track for your life."

The Eides say the program has changed their lives. They now workout every day, pack snacks instead of eating out, and they've stopped taking prescription and over-the-counter drugs. And, they say their new lifestyle is saving them about $1,000 a year, along with something you can't put a price on. Jon Eide says, "As far as I'm concerned, they saved my life."

The Optifast program costs $4,000 a person, although there is a discount for couples who join together.
