Protestors say Petland gets its dogs from puppy mills (WHO-TV / March 14, 2009) |
The Iowa Voters for Companion Animals say between January 2007 and June 2008, 48% of Iowa's licensed kennels had serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act. That act sets policies on how breeders treat their animals, so advocates have taken their fight to the Iowa statehouse to better protect animals.
"We have legislation that is pending in the House of Representatives. We have a meeting coming up this Monday at 11:00 in the agriculture committee. We are asking for state oversight of the USDA-licensed breeding mills in the state of Iowa," said Humane Society volunteer Lin Sorenson.
The West Des Moines protest was one of 25 nationwide. Petland has previously denied using puppy mills.
