PHONE SCAM: Ames and Nevada residents are getting automatic calls claiming to be from a local credit union and asking for banking information
Ames and Nevada residents are the targets of a phone scam. The automated calls began Monday and are random in nature.

The caller reports to be from River Valley Credit Union, which has locations in both Ames and Nevada, and asks for banking and credit card information. Police say the scam is using "caller ID spoofing," which allows the phone number to appear legitimate.

Officials say it will be difficult to find the scammer and any money lost to the scam will be nearly impossible to recover.
