DES MOINES—
A high speed chase in Des Moines ended after the suspect led police along a bicycle trail. The chase started with a suspected burglar wanted by police stepping on the gas instead of surrendering.Police got a tip that the suspect, 40-year-old Steven Leroy Adcock of Muscatine was in town but while they were staking out the truck that they believe he stole he got in and took off. "As they sat on the vehicle the suspect came out and got in the car," says Des Moines Police Sergeant Lori Lavorato, "They didn't get to him quickly enough before he got into the car."
Police say Adcock turned north onto MLK from Hickman, the whole time, chunks of his crumbling tire are flying off. Minutes later, he turns on to Douglas heading east bound, at this point riding on just the rim of his truck. Then the unexpected, he turns on to the bike trail by the old Target, speeding right past a work crew. "I seen about ten cop cars down the walkway here. Just flying. I didn't know what they were doing. I just heard the sirens so i was like, wow," says witness Eugene Williams.
Police continued chasing Adcock down the bike trail, missing a bicyclist by just inches. At one point he loses control, goes airborne for a second and crashes back down, then it's back on to the trail. Minutes later Adcock runs out of trail and tries to get on the road, finding himself stuck in the mud instead. He was arrested without incident.
Police say this proves you can't outrun the law even on a running trail. "It's amazing to me that when people have warrants out for their arrest what they do to try to get out of those," Lavorato says, "And you are not going to outrun the warrants no matter how fast you go."
