Windsor Heights Police say they're also receiving additional information from people who purchased puppies from a home located at 6530 Elmcrest Drive.

Amber Kline purchased a puppy from the home after seeing a posting on Craigslist. She says she purchased the puppy from a woman by the name of Crystal Hallinan for $100 in late October.

"You wouldn't have suspected a thing," says Kline. "Other than the smell was pretty strong."

Captain Dennis McDaniel, of the Windsor Heights Police Department says others noticed the stench, "We received complaints about odor, animals barking, yelping at all hour of the day and night."

On Tuesday, Police searched the home, seizing four dead puppies, computers and what is described as volumes of documents.

Police believe the home on Elmcrest served as a brokerage house. The puppies, they believe, were bred elsewhere. A statewide effort is now underway to determine where.

Authorities are also looking at veterinary records, some of which came from the Afford-A-Care veterinary clinic located at 3003 SE 14th Street. The office manager acknowledged some of the puppies were brought in for their initial round of shots. In exchange, the clinic provided the customer with several coupons for a $5 discount on return visits.

"There have been documents passed on from more than one veterinary office that may have been falsified," says McDaniel.

Police have also received numerous complaints from people who say the puppies they purchased at the Elmcrest home were sick. Some later died.

"I do know Parvovirus has been mentioned, pneumonia mentioned and I believe a few other ailments as well," says McDaniel.

Kline's puppy, Max, has an incision on his belly. Kline says Hallinan told her it was from the puppy's umbilical cord. Now, she's not so sure, "Now that we've found out what's going on, were taking him to the vet we've taken our other dogs."
