The new dad says, "They were crying instantly and it was just such a joy, just all the emotions that had built up in 30 weeks just came out."
The babies were born ten weeks early. James says, "The kids are doing great. The boys have ventilators helping them breath, but they're breathing on their own."
The new siblings are getting used to life outside the womb in two rooms at Mercy's NICU. Nurses say the incubators, eye bands and swaddling help them feel like they're still in the womb. The girls weigh in at two pounds ten ounces. Max tips the scales at three pounds seven ounces. James says, "Overall the nurses are very impressed with the condition of the babies and how big they were."
The Dotzlers call the babies a miracle. They tried to get pregnant for two years. Casey says, "Then after the second year we kind of decided to just get a little extra help, so we did just one month of fertility and we ended up with four blessings."
The Polk County Park Ranger and Des Moines Head Start teacher say they know the four blessings will take a lot of time and money. Casey says, "We'll just kind of make the best of it and do the best we can."
The new parents won't be taking the bundles of joy home anytime soon. They could be in the NICU until their original due date of January 23.
Mercy Medical Center had five sets of quadruplets born in 1999.
