Water rescue

Woman rescued from Des Moines River by construction worker (WHO)

The day after that dramatic rescue on the Des Moines River, another attempt to save something from the river proves to be very challenging.

A Pleasant Hill woman is recovering in the hospital tonight as she also deals with the loss of her husband. 62-year old Alan Neely and his 67-year old wife Patricia were boating along the Des Moines River when their boat went over the Center Street Dam and capsized.

Patricia was saved when a construction worker, suspended from a crane, pulled her out of the water. Alan was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water downstream. Police reports reveal the couple was scouting a spot to take their grandchildren to watch fireworks.

Meanwhile the construction workers from Cramer and Associates went back to work Wednesday on the Riverwalk pedestrian bridge near Wells Fargo Arena. Although they had no idea there were going to be asked to help again the day after their rescue.

The effort Wednesday focused on retrieving the large boat the Neely's were in before the accident. It took about 45 minutes, but the same crane operator from Tuesday was able to hook into the front of the boat that had been bobbing up and down in the river overnight and into Wednesday morning. Unfortunately it fell back into the river and is now stuck 100 yards further downstream from the dam. DNR officials don't know how they're going to get it out. They want to check the boat and engine to try to figure out what went wrong.
