The Des Moines school board is taking its final vote Tuesday on how to cut millions from its budget. The state's largest district faces a $17.5 million shortfall after Governor Culver ordered 10-percent across-the-board cuts.
The board will cover the gap by using cash reserves, one time stimulus money, and unused carry over dollars from a number of programs. The plan does not include layoffs. The district will continue freezes on new hires and equipment purchases.
The board is concerned with additional cuts which will most likely need to be addressed for next year's budget. Layoffs are still possible for the 2011 school year.
