Top Iowa lawmakers are warning local school officials against sending layoff notices to teachers. The lawmakers say at least 14 school districts have sent layoff notices to teachers because of cuts in state funding.
The lawmakers say that funding will replaced with federal dollars. Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, says one district, Cardinal of Eldon in southeast Iowa, sent layoff notices to 23 teachers, or about half its teachers.
Gronstal calls that "outrageous."
House Speaker Pat Murphy, D-Dubuque, says the federal economic stimulus package will help protect education and keep hundreds of teachers off the unemployment line.
