Police are revealing new details in Sunday night's officer involved shooting at a Des Moines store. Now, police say the man they shot was not armed.

Around 6:00 Sunday night, police responded to a possible robbery at the Dollar Tree on East Euclid Avenue. Minutes later, shots were fired and the alleged robber was wounded by police.

Police say both Officer Hung Ung and officer Brian Carter fired shots at the suspect, 30 year-old Daniel Carter fired shots at Daniel Carter. And while Carter was not armed, police say deadly force was necessary.

Clerk: "Give him the money give him the money."

911 Dispatcher: "Yep, give him the money."

Clerk: "Get your hand off her!"

911 Dispatcher: "Give him the money if he's asking for it."

A frantic Dollar Tree clerk calls 911. Police say 30 year-old Daniel Carter is in the store threatening to sexually assault one of the clerks.

"She advised us the black male in the store had said 'I'm going to rob you,' and made comments about having sex with one of the clerks - that's nicely putting it," says Sgt. Lori Lavorato of the Des Moines Police Dept.

Police say before Carter attempted to rob the Dollar Tree, he broke into Bare Basics day care center just down the street. Police say after trying to assault one of the ladies cleaning inside, he fled on foot. While the day care called 911, Carter went inside the Dollar Tree and grabbed one of the clerks.

"He was holding her as his hostage. Officers saw he was becoming more forceful with her and poking her in the back with what they believed was a gun in his coat."

While no one saw Carter with a gun, police say he told the clerks he had a weapon, and led police to believe he had a weapon.

Police say that's when Officer Hung and Officer Carter fired shots at Daniel Carter. One officer shot him in the face, the other, in the abdomen.

"Anytime you shoot you shoot to stop that threat. We don't shoot to wound people," says Sgt. Lavorato.

As it turns out, Carter was not carrying a weapon. However, police say that didn't make Carter any less of a threat.

"This was just as good as if he had a weapon. He wanted us to believe that and we believed that. Everyone around believed that."

Both officers are on paid administrative leave. Right now there is an investigation into their actions, which will eventually go before a shooting review board. Police say Daniel Carter has life threatening injuries.
