Iowa is devoting nearly 3,000 soldiers to the war in Afghanistan. Even though they won't leave the states until this fall, their families are already making big sacrifices.
The Hartkopf family welcomed its newest member Wednesday. Baby Sophie weighed in at almost 7lbs. Her father, Steve, has yet to meet her. He deployed August 9th as part of Iowa's record deployment.
Sophie's mom, Stacy says technology will play a big role for the next year in building this father-daughter relationship.
"We're trying to get computers so we can do Skype," she said. "We've been talking a lot on the phone, and I've been sending him pictures."
Specialist Hartkopf isn't alone. He says at three other members in his unit will be new parents this month alone.
