Members of Iowa's largest union begin voting on a revised contract with the state Thursday. AFSCME Council 61 decided to open its contract to negotiate in hopes of saving hundreds of jobs.
The negotiations came about after Governor Culver ordered a 10 percent across-the-board cut to the state's budget.
Next week, the State Police Officers Council will vote on a different agreement. That deal could save 40 union jobs, including State Troopers and game enforcement officers.
A third union, Iowa United Professionals, is not negotiating with the state.
