The state is honoring Iowans serving in Iraq and Afghanistan along with veterans from all wars. Several ceremonies are planned for Veterans Day, but perhaps the largest will take place at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
The free tribute will feature a concert by the band The Nadas. It begins at noon and the public is invited.
Also at noon, Fort Des Moines Museum is holding a free Veterans Day ceremony featuring the Hoover High School band.
Iowa State University is also hosting a service at the Gold Star Hall in Memorial Union and begins at 2:30 p.m. This year, seven names of Iowa State students killed while serving their country were added to the walls of the Gold Star Hall.
Of the new names, five were killed in the Korean War, one from the Vietnam War and one from World War II.
Businesses are showing their appreciation to veterans. Hy-Vee is offering a free breakfast from 7:00 until 11:00 Wednesday morning at all stores with in-store dining.
Merle Hay mall is hosting a free Veterans Day pancake breakfast near Sears. It is from 7:00 a.m. and will go until supplies are gone.
Veterans can also stop by Krispy Kreme for a free doughnut and Applebee's is offering service members a free entree and side dish.
