34-year-old midget driver Chad McDaniel from Kansas died after the car in front of him began to flip and he ran into the car.
McDaniel was taken to Knoxville Hospital and later airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. USAC Racing officials are shaken up by the tragic accident.
"You never think it could happen to you because you always feel that you're in control of whats going on. Its the things that are out of your control that end up being the things that get guys injured," said Jason McCord with the USAC.
In an interview with the Des Moines Register, McDaniel's parents say their son was well respected by his hometown of Concordia, Kansas.
USAC has established a support fund for the family. Donations can be made online at
All proceeds from Friday and Saturday night's 50/50 drawing at Knoxville will go to the family. The track also passed a helmet around Saturday for fans to put donations in.
McDaniel leaves behind a wife and two young children.
