SILVIS, Illinois—
He's a little boy with a big medical condition. A few weeks ago, News 8 introduced you to Ricardo Alonso, the second-grader who was struck down with a rare cardiac condition back in January. On Friday night, a Taco Dinner Fundraiser was held for him at the Bowlesburg Elementary school. Hundreds showed up to raise money to buy a wheelchair accessible van for the family and to cover medical expenses that insurance doesn't. More than 70 raffle baskets were up for grabs and T-shirts that say "Do It 4 Ricardo" were for sale.
"It's heartbreaking to see one of your kids like that. I know it's difficult for his classmates and students in his class and it took them a while to kind of figure out Ricardo's not coming back to school anytime soon," says Ricardo's teacher, Jamie Sevier.
Ricardo has the same medical condition that claimed the life of his older brother three years ago. A fund has been set up at THE National Bank.
